![]() “I think I attributed a little bit of that to Strawberry as well.” “I always felt like a dachshund raised by dalmatians,” she said. ![]() Growing up in rural Washington, Son never quite felt like she fit in and was drawn to performing from an early age as a way to counteract her innate shyness. ![]() Suzanna Son waited two years before she got the call to audition for Strawberry in A24's "Red Rocket." (Celeste Sloman / For The Times) “Her instincts were dead-on, and she has such range. “I could see her having an Emma Stone-type career,” Baker said. Headlines in the trade magazine the Hollywood Reporter and alt-fashion magazine Nylon have proclaimed her “The Next Big Thing.” And Son, whose musical talents are also on display in “Red Rocket,” was recently cast as a series regular opposite Lily-Rose Depp and the Weeknd in an upcoming HBO drama called “The Idol,” set in the music industry. Since its premiere in July at the Cannes Film Festival, “Red Rocket” has drawn critical acclaim, with Son’s sly yet vulnerable performance earning her a nomination for breakthrough performer at last month’s Gotham Awards.Įven before the film’s release, Son’s career had been getting a rocket boost. Son plays Strawberry, an innocent-looking but sexually adventurous 17-year-old from rural South Texas who enters a romantic relationship with a washed-up 40-something former porn actor named Mikey Saber, played by Simon Rex. Impressed by her audition - as well as her Instagram account, with its artistically composed self-portraits and video clips of her performing haunting, melancholy songs at a piano - Baker cast Son in his raucously grungy new dramedy “Red Rocket,” which is now playing in limited release. “I said, ‘Yeah, I’m kind of obsessing over this pipe dream, aren’t I?’ Then, like magic, eight hours later I opened up my phone and there was a message from Sean saying, ‘Do you want to audition?’ It was the best ‘I told you so’ ever.” History itself took a dark direction, which could foreshadow an equally depressing ending to the film.“He was like, ‘I think you should give up because it’s been so long, and I don’t want you to be disappointed,’” Son said. Red Rocket is set amidst the 2016 Presidential Election. If there are any hints on whether or not Mikey is successful, it’s worth digging into the historical context of the story. As he had done with his previous films, Baker doesn’t cast judgment on the characters. It’s observing authentic characters in a realistic situation. ![]() This scene is particularly impactful because previously, the film was presented through a purely objective lens. It’s not the film that is objectifying Strawberry it’s just Mikey. It’s difficult to stomach how Mikey perceives the world, and more importantly, how he views women. Baker wasn’t trying to make Mikey empathetic, but the dream sequence of Strawberry is the first time the viewer sees things from his point of view. Mikey continues to fantasize about his future, even when he has all the odds stacked against him. Whether Mikey actually reaches Strawberry’s house, if she agrees to join him and whether he brings her with him to California are all left to the viewer’s interpretation.īaker said that he chose to show Mikey’s vision of Strawberry to dissect the male gaze. However, Red Rocket ends before either character’s ultimate fate is revealed. As he reaches his destination, Mikey has a vision of Strawberry in a red bathing suit. He knows that he’ll have to be quick once he gets there. Leondria gives Mikey $200 and tells him to never return to Texas City. He barely manages to escape and runs naked through the neighborhood. Leondria's daughter, June ( Brittney Rodriguez), and her brothers show up at Lexi’s house to threaten Mikey. Mikey has been selling marijuana for Leonadria, and Lexi tells her to take back the $3,000 that he had earned while dealing for her. She contacts Mikey’s old acquaintance Leondria ( Judy Hill). After telling Lexi, who he started sleeping with again, his ex-wife is furious. Mikey’s big plan is to bring Strawberry to Los Angeles with him and help launch her career in porn.
